This is home–made-to-the–finest apple pie!
Although, I’m fairly confident in the kitchen, when it comes to something like Apple Pie, where it is well known to everyone and evokes such fond memories, I get a little nervous to create something new. You hear how everyone‘s grandma or aunt or mom makes the BEST apple pie. So, why mess with that?
Well, I was wanting to really just try something new and since I’ve never really made an apple pie, this seemed liked a fun fall dessert after a dinner of homemade Ruben sandwiches.
What I found out what Apple Pie doesn’t need to seem so intimidating. It can be uber easy to throw together and can taste even better the next day reheated. The trick to this apple pie is to start the pie at 425 degrees for 10 minutes to set the outside and really heat everything thru, then reduce the heat to 350 degrees for the remaining cook time to allow the apples to fully soften and all the flavors to cook together.
This will be a very well received treat. I would recommend making two pies because the first one will disappear quickly from your kitchen! Enjoy!
Home Made Apple Pie
- 4-5 Macintosh Apples, peeled, cored and sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp ground allspice
- Pie crust – store bought or made at home, your preference
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1/8 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 tsp milk
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and lightly butter your pie dish. Set aside.
- Peel, core and cut apples into slices. This can be made really simple by using an apple corer after they have been peeled. Put the slices into a large bowl and set aside.
- Mix the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice in a small bowl. Using a fork or whisk, stir together until all the ingredients are fully blended together.
- Pour the spice/sugar mixture over the pre-cut apples and toss until all of the slices are fully coated.
- Place one layer of your pie crust on the lower portion of your pie pan. Pour the coated apples in the pie pan and place the other layer of the pie crust on top of the apples.
- Cut lines from the center of the pie out to the crust to allow the pie to breathe while baking. For decoration, you can cut a small apple at the center of the pie.
- Place in the oven and bake for 10 minutes at 425 degrees. Then reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees and continue baking for another 50 minutes.
- When the pie is done, pull out of the oven and set out to cool.
- Within the first 5-10 minutes of the pie being out of the oven, mix together the powdered sugar, vanilla and milk until fully incorporated. Pour over the baked pie and make sure not to miss the holes in the top to let it soak in.
- Let pie sit for a few hours before cutting into so that it has time to set.
- Store in the fridge and eat cold or reheat the next day.
